Admission to an online MA in India is merit-based at almost every university: you need a bachelor’s degree, an ABC ID and a DEB ID, and an application on the university’s own website. For the July 2026 session, the UGC-DEB list shows 246 online MA programmes at 74 universities. This guide covers who can apply, the documents you need, how to check that a programme is approved, and which MA subjects are most widely offered online.
Online MA Eligibility
| Requirement | What universities ask for |
|---|---|
| Qualification | A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a UGC-recognised university |
| Minimum marks | Set by each university; commonly 45% to 50% in graduation |
| Subject background | Some subjects, such as Economics or English, may require that subject at graduation |
| Entrance exam | Not required for most online MA programmes |
| Age limit | None at most universities |
Entrance tests such as CUET PG apply to campus admissions at central universities, not to most online MA programmes.
Documents You Need
- Class 10 and 12 mark sheets
- Graduation mark sheets and degree or provisional certificate
- ID proof such as Aadhaar or PAN
- Your ABC ID and DEB ID
- A passport-size photograph and signature
- Category certificate, if you are claiming a reserved-category concession
Online MA Admission Process, Step by Step
- Check approval: confirm on deb.ugc.ac.in that the university and the exact MA subject are listed in online mode for your session.
- Create your ABC ID: generate it on DigiLocker using Aadhaar.
- Generate your DEB ID: enter the ABC ID on deb.ugc.ac.in and verify with the Aadhaar OTP. Online admissions without a DEB ID are not treated as valid.
- Apply on the university website: fill in personal and academic details and upload the documents above.
- Pay the fee: only through the university’s official payment page, never to an agent or a personal account.
- Get your enrolment number: the university confirms admission and gives you access to its learning platform.

- Political Science and Public Administration: civil services preparation, policy research and NGO work.
- Sociology: social research, development sector and NGO roles, and teaching.

Common Mistakes That Make an Online MA Admission Invalid
- Enrolling in a programme not listed for your session. University-level recognition is not enough; the specific MA subject must be listed in online mode for the session you join.
- Confusing distance and online mode. A university may list a subject in distance mode only. Make sure the mode on the list matches what you are paying for.
- Skipping the DEB ID. Admissions without a DEB ID are not treated as valid.
- Paying an agent. Pay only through the university’s official website; agents and personal accounts give you no recourse.
- Falling for fast-track offers. An MA takes two years. Any offer to finish it in months is not a recognised degree.
Admission Sessions
The UGC-DEB list is published session by session, and a university can admit students only for the sessions it is listed for. The July 2026 list is the current one. Before you apply for a later intake, check that the university appears on the list for that session.
Online MA Fees
Fees vary widely by university and subject. Public universities and open universities usually charge the least; private and deemed universities charge more. Confirm the current fee, and any registration or exam charges, on the university’s official admission page. Subject-specific guides, such as our online MA Economics guide, list the fees universities publish.

Most universities admit online MA students on merit, without an entrance exam. Check the specific university’s admission rules.

A DEB ID is a unique student ID generated on the UGC-DEB portal using your ABC ID. Universities need it to register you for an online or distance programme.

How many universities offer an online MA?
For July 2026, the UGC-DEB list shows 246 online MA programmes at 74 universities.
Is an online MA valid for government jobs?
Yes, if the university is listed for that programme in online mode for your session. Under Regulation 22 it is equivalent to the campus degree.
